Berry College edges YHC in exciting fashion at Kennesaw

KENNESAW, Ga. –  Cory Hall scored with 1:44 left in regulation as Berry College edged Young Harris College, 10-9, at Ffifth Third Bank on Saturday.

The Vikings are now 1-0 and the Mountain Lions dropped to 0-2.

BC trailed 9-7 late in the game before tallying the match's final three goals and securing the win. With 5:21 left, Quentin Johnson scored off an assist from Jake Emche. Maxwell Smerka then recorded his second goal of the game to knot the game at 9-9 with 3:43 on the clock.

Following Hall's eventual game-winning goal, Berry won the faceoff and the Vikings held the ball for the remainder of time. Young Harris was felled two penalties in the final 1:14 which hindered their chance at regaining possession.

"I was really proud of our composure today," said Berry Head Coach Curtis Gilbert. "We played a full 60 minutes, which made a huge difference for us. We also made some big plays at the end."

Hall recorded three points as he also dished one assist. Johnson (one goal, two assists) had three points as well. Christian Akers joined Smerka with two goals in the game.

The seesaw game saw Berry jump to a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Young Harris, however, outscored BC 5-1 in the second period and held 6-4 lead at halftime. After the Vikings scored two goals in the third stanza to YHC's one, the game was tied at seven apiece heading to the final 15 minutes.

Berry had a big edge in shots (37-20), while the Mountain Lions led in win faceoffs (14-9) and ground balls (24-20).

Viking goalkeeper Nick Voso got the win. He saved eight shots. Ryan Pitckowitz had nine saves in the loss for YHC. Mitch McDole netted one goal and passed for three helpers for the Mountain Lions.

Berry next plays at Roanoke College on Sunday, Feb. 22.
