ATLANTA -- Katie O'Rourke and Christina Goforth spiked 12 kills apiece as the Berry College volleyball team defeated Oglethorpe, 3-0, on Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15 and 25-17.
The win improved BC to 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 5-15 and 0-8.
While both Oglethorpe and Berry posted an equal 13 kills in the first set, Berry came away with the, 25-22, win. The Vikes then followed suite, outhitting the Stormy Petrels in both the second and third sets.
O'Rourke hit .500 on the night and had five blocks to lead BC. Goforth hit .357 and collected 16 digs in the win as well.
Katie Truluck headed up the defensive effort with 19 digs. Lauren Schmitz also dished 35 assists for the Vikings.
"Overall, we did a great job of staying in system and being patient offensively tonight, and our blocking continues to improve as well," said Berry Head Coach Mika Robinson. "Lauren made great choices offensively, and our hitters took full advantage of those choices."
For Oglethorpe, Santreece Stephens, Anna Rash and MaryAnn Smith each had seven kills in the loss.
As a team, Berry hit .312 to OU's .180. The Vikes also led in assists (38-34). digs (57-53), and kills (45-34).
Berry will host Sewanee in their next SAA match on Saturday, Oct. 10. The first set is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the Cage Center.
