Day one of 2014 Berry College Volleyball Invitational

ROME, Ga. -- The 2014 Berry College Volleyball Invitational started at The Cage Center on Saturday. Berry opened the year with a loss to Randolph-Macon, but rallied to defeat DePauw in the nightcap. Both scores were 3-1.

Against, RMC, came out with a win for the first set, but the visitors swept the next three. The set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, and 18-25.

Berry's Emily Stromberg had a match-high 19 kills. Lauren Schmitz had 45 assists and Katie Truluck recorded 20 digs. Katie Rossberg and Courtney Lowers each collected 13 kills for the Yellow Jackets.

Berry defeated DePauw's Tigers 3-1 in four sets. The set scores were 25-22, 25-16, 12-25, and 27-25.

Stromberg recorded 15 kills along and Anna Keappler earned 10 kills in the match.  Schmitz listed 35 assists and Katie Truluck collected 20 digs.

The Tigers' Mary Kate Etling gained 16 kills and Faith Rolwes had 38 assists.

"I thought we did a lot of things well today," said BC Head Coach Mika Robinson. "In particular, our ball control and blocking was strong overall. Our serving was aggressive, but we made more errors than we like to see. I was very happy to how they bounced back in the second match--despite struggling a bit offensively at times--and thought our floor defenders did a great job today."

The Vikings (1-1) play their next tournament game Sunday against Lynchburg at 12 p.m. They close the tournament with a 4 p.m. match vs. Emory.

Saturday Results:

-Emory 3, Randolph Macon 1. Leah Jacobs notched 17 kills for the Eagles. RMC's Courtney Lowers spike a match-best 22 kills.

-Lynchburg 3, Agnes Scott 0. Gabby Myers dished 11 assists for LC and Shakirah Dodson netted 11 digs for the Scotties.

-Randolph Macon 3, Berry 1. Emily Stromberg had a match-high 19 kills for Berry. Katie Rossberg and Courtney Lowers each collected 13 kills for the Yellow Jackets.

-DePauw 3, Agnes Scott 0. Mary Kate Etling recorded 10 kills for Depauw. For Agnes Scott, Shelli Sherman collected 14 digs.

-Emory 3, Lynchburg 0. Sydney Miles passed for 23 assists for Emory. For Lynchburg, Brittany Crawford notched a math-best 12 digs.

-Berry 3, DePauw 1. Emily Stromberg had 15 kills and 15 digs for BC. For the Tigers, Mary Kate Etling spiked 16 kills.
