Box Score ROME, Ga. -- Berry College defeated Covenant, 16-15 in 13 innings, on Tuesday night. The Vikings improved to 15-5 and the Scots dropped to 9-6.
Alex McGill doubled to lead off the 13th inning. Will Heard later placed a bunt down and losing pitcher Taylor Bloye threw offline to first base and McGill scored on the error.
McGill had a monster game for BC going 5-7 with two doubles and three RBI for the victorious Vikings. Heard and Doug Heath collected three hits each for Berry.
Danny Parry (2-0) tossed the last 5 2/3 innings for BC and got the win. He allowed no runs, scattered two hits, struck out five and walked two.
The marathon game lasted nearly four hours and 42 minutes, but it was an even longer day for both teams. The contest was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. at Covenant. When heavy fog lingered over Lookout Mountain, the teams drove south to Berry for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
The Vikings got off to a strong start and led 9-1 after five innings. The Scots, however, plated three runs in the sixth and added 10 in the seventh frame.
Trailing 15-11 in the eighth, Berry rallied with four scores in the bottom half to tie the game.
The two clubs combined for 42 hits and Covenant had 22. Z Armina and Scott Gillespie both had four hits in the contest for the Scots.
The Vikings host Birmingham-Southern on Saturday.
