Vikings sweep Agnes Scott on opening day

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College opened the 2014 softball season with a sweep of visiting Agnes Scott College on Saturday. Game scores were 10-7 and 7-5.

In game one, the Vikings trailed 4-0 before rallying. Starting pitcher Andrea Cole allowed no more runs after the first inning and earned the win.

The Vikings trailed 4-3 before plating six runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Scotties. Sarah Moore doubled to drive in two runs as the Vikes took the lead. Fellow freshmen Allison DeBusk and Marie Collop later hit back-to-back home runs. DeBusk's was a three-run bomb and Collop's was a solo shot.

Moore hit 2-3 with four RBI to lead BC hitters. Collop, Abby Daniels and Sara Vigue all had two hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, BC again had to mount a comeback as they trailed 2-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning. Yet the Vikes responded with three runs and never trailed again. Berry won, 7-5.

Shelby Smith went 3-4 with a home run to pace BC batters. Vigue and Daniels recorded two hits in the game.

Allie Coronado started for Berry and pitched three innings. Collop tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, and garnered the victory.

Berry hosts Covenant on Saturday at 1 p.m.
