ROME, Ga. -- Berry College swept Bates College by scores of 8-3 and 6-1 on Wednesday at William R. Bowdoin Field. The Vikings, which have now won four straight games, moved to 6-3. The Bobcats fell to 0-4.
In game one, starting pitcher Ben Jernigan (2-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings and earned the win. Jernigan pitched four scoreless innings before surrendering three runs in the fifth frame. He allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked three Bobcats.
Doug Heath closed the game with 1 2/3 innings of no-hit ball. He struck out two hitters and allowed no walks.
In the first inning, Dusty Tyson scored on a sacrifice fly to give the home club and early 1-0 lead. The Vikings scored a run in the fourth and plated six in the fifth en-route to the win.
T.C. Boyd went 2-3 with a double and two RBI to lead BC hitters. Sam Pope and Zach Farmer both collected two hits for Berry.
Ryan O'Connell got the nod to start game two. O'Connell is coming off receiving the SAA pitching honors, and he did not disappoint in the five innings he hurled against the Bobcats. O'Connell only allowed a run off five hits with two strikeouts.
Freshmen pitching came to close out the game consisting of Hunter White, Jacob Bowman, and Zach Dutton. The three pitchers did not allow a run and only gave up two hits in the two frames pitched.
Offensively, the Vikings scored at least one run in every inning except the third frame. Alex McGill drove in two RBIs on two hits, while Tyson racked up two hits of his own and drove in one run. Grant Perkins was able to gather two hits and score twice in the game.
Berry opens Southern Athletic Association play on March 1 when the Vikings play a doubleheader at Oglethorpe.
