CONWAY, Ark. -- Christian Fulbright scored two goals as the Berry College men's soccer team defeated Birmingham-Southern College, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon winning the Southern Athletic Association Conference Championship. Zak Wallingford earned assists on both scoring plays.

The underdog Vikings made their way through the three-day SAA tournament without conceding a goal. The Panthers were the tournament's #2 seed and Berry was #5.

The win boosted the Vikings to 12-6-1. The close loss dropped BSC's record to 13-4-1 overall.

"We were brilliant this weekend and had a tremendous spirit," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "To not concede any goals against the players we were up against is a testament to that fact. We started sluggish in today's game and I was worried we had hit a wall. But we finished very strong and deserved the championship. We are looking forward to nationals."

Battling it out head to head, the Vikings and the Panthers kept the game close the first half, leaving the score tied, 0-0, at halftime.

Fulbright's first goal of the game came in the 56th minute as he finished a through ball from Wallingford. He scored in the middle of the net.

From about ten yards out, Fulbright's second goal of the game came in the 79th minute on Wallingford's second assist of the day. The goal found the back of the net in the top right corner to extend the Viking lead to 2-0.

Although BSC fought back hard with two shots coming in the last few minutes, the Berry defense held off the Panthers for the victory. The Vikings avenged a 2-0 loss in Birmingham last month.

Berry led the competition in both shots (14-9) and corner kicks (7-1).

Zachary Wroblewski and Jon Nelson split the game at goalie for the Vikings. Nelson got the win as he left when the score was 1-0. For the Panthers, Jonas Heidrich posted four saves in the loss.

Fulbright was the tournament MVP. Teammates Matt Williams and Wallingford joined him on the All-Tournament team.

The SAA championship is the second in three years for Coach Vardy's team.
