ROME, Ga. — Berry improved to a total record of 9-3 and 3-0 in the Southern Athletic Association Tuesday night against Oglethorpe. The set scores were 25-21, 25-13 and 25-21.
Katie O'Rourke and Emily Stromberg led the team with nine and seven kills, respectively.Stephanie Quinn had 27 assists, and 6 kills. Katie Truluck notched 14 digs for the home team.
The Vikings, however, struggled in the first set. Trailing 7-0 to start the match BC called a timeout and rallied. They came back to tie the game at 12. Throughout the set, the Vikings continued to tie the score until they prevailed 25-21.
"I think every team has the ability to come out and just kind of get a bit rattled right away, said Coach Mika Robinson. "We got rattled for a few points in a row. But I'm really proud of how they regained their composure and pulled away one point at a time."
The Vikings excelled in the second set and took advantage of Oglethorpe's mistakes, taking on a double-digit lead. "I think it was a composure thing: just a matter of being focused on first contact and taking care of the ball, not trying to do too much."
The third set was a close match, with Oglethorpe tying the score at 18 but Berry found their rhythm and closed it out to sweep the Stormy Petrels (3-5, 0-3). Megan Makuck had a match-best 16 digs for OU.
"We were very efficient tonight, low amount of errors, and we put a lot of pressure on them with our offense," said Robinson.
Berry's next game is Friday at Rhodes College at 7 p.m.
