Box Score 2 ORANGE, Calif. -- The Berry College softball team salvaged a split with Chapman University on Saturday. After dropping the opener 6-0, the Vikings rallied to win the nightcap by a score of 7-2. Berry is now 7-3 and Chapman is 9-2 after the twin bill.
In the second game, Jessica Washington went 3-4 and scored three times. Kristen Stoll was 3-4 with a run, a double and three RBI. The Vikes collected 10 hits (including three extra-base hits) in the contest.
Berry chased starter Katie Terry with four runs in the first inning. The scoring was highlighted by a triple by Abbey Daniels that scored three runs.
Allison Coronado started and tossed first three shutout innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth frame. After giving up two runs, Natalie Boyd entered the game with the bases loaded and BC leading 4-2. She then struck out Brittany Furlong to end the threat.
Boyd got the win and improved to a perfect 3-0 for the season. She hurled the final 3.1 innings, allowed no runs, scattered three hits and struck out two Panthers.
In game one, Berry lost 6-0. The Panthers busted open a 1-0 game after plating five runs in third frame.
Starting pitcher Caillee Shamoun took the loss and is now 3-2 on the year. She allowed all six runs and five were earned. Six different Vikings got one hit in the game. Shelby Smith was 1-2 with a stolen base.
BC got close but couldn't reach home plate in the first game. In the fourth inning, Boyd singled up the middle and Shelby Smith advanced tried to score from second base. Smith, however, was cut down at home after centerfielder Jenny Richards threw to catcher Lisa Perez, who blocked the plate and tagged Smith for the inning's third out.
Kyla Javier went 1-3 with a triple and three RBI to lead Chapman. Cassie Oregel tossed the complete game shutout and improved to 4-1.
Berry concludes its California road trip on Tuesday at Cal Lutheran. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. EST.
