ROME, Ga. – Berry's softball team won both ends of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Maryville at South Ford Field. Game scores were 9-2 and 9-1.
Berry earned its first two W's of the season and improved to 2-2. Maryville remained winless at 0-6.
In the opener, the Vikings used a five-run first and Caillee Shamoun's (1-1) pitching to pick up the victory.
Sara Vigue, Kristen Stoll, Lacey Herring and Abbey Daniels hit RBI doubles, and Courtney Hodges added a RBI single to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 lead in the first.
Jessie Washington, Stoll, Herring, Shelby Smith and Daniels had multi-hit performances for Berry. Hannah Youngdeer drove in both of Maryville's runs on a two-run single in the first.
Shamoun tossed a complete-game three-hitter for Berry, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Maryville's Megan Mihaliak took the loss, lasting three innings and giving up seven runs (five earned).
In the nightcap, the Vikings fell behind in the first inning yet again. Berry, however, scored all of their runs in the second and third innings combined to close out the game in five innings.
During a seven-run second, Daniels, Lindsey Campbell, Courtney Cauthen, Washington and Herring drove in runs.
Campbell finished with two hits for Berry while Taylor Dockery had Maryville's lone base hit.
Freshman Allie Coronado (1-1) earned his first career victory for Berry. She pitched a five-inning complete game two-hitter. Coronado gave up two hits, one unearned run and four walks.
Berry will hit the road for its next game on Friday morning. The team will face Salisbury University (Md.) in a neutral site game at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
