ATLANTA, Ga. – Berry (6-2) won its first match before losing its next one in the second and final day of the Emory Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The opening match saw Berry rally from two sets down to emerge victorious over Transylvania University, 21-25, 26-28, 25-21, 25-22 and 15-13. Junior Stephanie Quinn notched 47 assists while sophomore Gretchen Kaufman had 15 kills. Freshman Katie O'Rourke recorded nine kills.
"I was incredibly proud of the grit we showed in coming back from an 0-2 start to win in five sets against a very good Transylvania team," said Berry head coach Mika Robinson. "Our ball control and serving in games three-five made it possible for Stephanie to get all five of our hitters great looks."
Berry's final match of the day pitted the team against number four-ranked Emory. After winning the match's first opening game, Berry lost the following three to drop the match, 27-25, 17-25, 16-25 and 12-25.
Quinn picked up 29 assists and eight digs while senior Jenn Tinnell had 18 digs. O'Rourke tallied nine kills.
"Coming immediately off our five-set win over Transylvania, we did a great job of stepping up to challenge Emory on their home floor," Robinson said. "The match was full of long rallies, and I was proud of this young team for maintaining their composure even when our execution faltered at times. We are really excited to get conference play started this week."
Berry will make program history when it matches up against Oglethorpe on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. This meeting will mark Berry volleyball's first conference matchup in the Southern Athletic Association.
NOTES: Following the event, O'Rourke was named to the Emory Classic All-Tournament Team.
