Berry scored six runs in the 10th inning to break open a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat Piedmont 9-5 in the second game of a softball doubleheader in Demorest, Ga., Friday evening. Piedmont won the opener 3-2.

In the nightcap, Denice Aleman and Katie Stanford drove in single runs in the fifth inning to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead. But the Lions answered with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game.

Neither team would score in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings, where the 3-3 score would hold until the 10th.

Berry erupted for six runs in the top of that frame, which was highlighted by a three-run triple by Holly Todd. Aleman, Jesica Washington and Kristin Stoll also drove in runs in the inning for Berry.

Piedmont scored twice in the bottom of the 10th, but the Lions weren't able to complete the comeback attempt.

Berry (23-11 overall) collected 13 hits in the win, including two apiece from Stoll, Lacey Herring, Krista Woody, Aleman, Stanford and Todd. 

Caillee Shamoun earned the win in a relief effort for Berry. In five innings, she allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out two batters.

Shamoun came on in relief of starter Andrea Cole, who allowed two runs on five hits in five innings. Cole struck out one batter and did not walk any.

Brittney Head, the third of three Piedmont pitchers in the game, took the loss after allowing six runs (all unearned) in two and two-thirds innings of work.

In the opener, Lacey Herring hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, but only two other Berry runners would advance past first base the rest of the game as Piedmont won on a late run.

After Herring's homer in the top of the sixth, Piedmont's Abby Atkinson raced home from third base on a Vikings' error with two outs in the bottom of the inning, scoring what turned out to be the game winning run.

Five different players accounted for Berry's five hits in the opener.

Shamoun took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. She fanned seven batters and did not walk anyone.

Head earned the win. She allowed two runs on five hits while striking out six batters in seven innings.

Berry is scheduled to close out its season Sunday at Huntingdon.
