Box Score Wartner's Second-Half Goal Gives Berry 2-0 Win Over Oglethorpe
Daniel Wartner tapped in a cross from Matt Majestic in the 64th minute to score what turned out to be the game winner as Berry defeated Oglethorpe 2-1 Sunday in the final game of the Piedmont Fall Classic in Demorest.
Wartner's goal, his second in as many days for the Vikings, allowed Berry to come from behind and improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Oglethorpe scored the first goal of the contest on a corner kick by Mark Lavery in the 37th minute. The Stormy Petrels held that lead for just six minutes until Berry would score the equalizer with just over two minutes remaining before halftime.
Like Oglethorpe's goal, the Vikings' first score came on a corner kick, as Christian Fulbright scored off Matt Majestic's kick.
Berry outshot Oglethorpe 13-9 overall. Eleven of the Vikings shot came on goal, while four of OU's nine shots were on target.
David Shaw, who scored a pair of goals in his first collegiate match Saturday, took five of Berry's 13 shots Sunday. Reid Popple and Steven Weeks each took a pair of shots.
Berry goalkeeper Kevin Madigan recorded three saves in 90 minutes of work. The Stormy Petrels' Frank Peterson recorded nine saves.
The Vikings are scheduled to return to action Sept. 10, when they travel to Axton, Va., to face Averett.
