Berry Defeats Birmingham-Southern 2-1 As Wallingford Scores in Overtime

Zak Wallingford scored a pair of goals, including the match winner with less than five minutes remaining to play in the second overtime, to give Berry a 2-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday in Birmingham.

Wallingford's second goal came in the match's 106th minute on an assist from Reid Popple, putting an end to a four-match winless streak and helping the Vikings improve to 3-3-1 overall in 2011.

Wallingford's match winner came approximately 98 minutes after he gave Berry its initial lead with a goal in the eighth minute.  Daniel Wartner assisted on the first scoring strike.

The Vikings would hold that 1-0 lead through the end of the first half and the first 29 minutes of the second frame, until Birmingham-Southern's Garner Shivers found the net in the 75th minute.

Neither team would score during the remainder of regulation or the first overtime period, setting up Wallingford's heroics.

Berry  held the Panthers to just one first-half shot, but BSC stormed back to fire nine shots in the second half and three combined shots in the two overtimes.  Birmingham-Southern would outshoot Berry 13-10 in the match, but Berry had two more shots on target by a 6-4 margin.

Four of Berry's shots came off the boot of Popple.

Vikings goalkeeper Kevin Madigan recorded six saves.  BSC's Sveibo Grimsson had four.

Berry returns home on Saturday to host Maryville at 3:30 at Ford Field.
