ROME, Ga. - Kristen Stoll drove in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Berry a 4-3 victory over Piedmont and help the Vikings complete a doubleheader sweep at South Ford Field Saturday. Caillee Shamoun pitched a shutout in the opener as the Vikings rolled to a 7-0 victory.
Stoll's game-winning RBI came with nobody out in the inning, after Blaze Wilson and Jessie Washington started the frame with back-to-back singles, and Sara Vigue was hit by a pitch for the third time in the game and the fourth time in the doubleheader. Stoll then stepped to the plate and delivered a shot to left field that scored Wilson and set off a celebration by the Vikings.
Berry was put in the position to win in its final at-bat after Piedmont rallied back to tie the game with a three run sixth inning that was highlighted by Jamie Dennis' two-run single and an RBI single from Lauren Head.
Chelsea Usher and Krista Woody drove in the Vikings' first two runs in the first inning, and Stoll gave Berry a 3-0 lead in the second with an RBI single.
Washington and Stoll each went 3-for-4 in the second victory, with Washington scoring twice.
Shamoun earned the victory. She pitched seven innings, even though she was actually taken out of the game in favor of Andrea Cole at the start of the sixth inning. Cole faced two batters, allowing a hit and walking one batter, before Shamoun returned to the pitcher's circle.
Shamoun allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Cole allowed two runs.
Brittany Head took the loss, allowing four runs in six innings for Piedmont.
Shamoun was outstanding in the opener, scattering five hits in seven shutout innings. She walked one batter and struck out one.
Meanwhile, Shamoun's teammates were busy putting runs on the scoreboard, scoring in all but one inning in which the Vikings batted.
The Vikings were 12-for-31 (.387) at the plate in the game, with Washington and Stoll helping lead the way in the opener, as well.
Washington was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and an RBI, while Stoll drove in three runs in a 2-for-4 performance. Wilson and Holly Todd also had two hits and scored a run apiece, while Krista Woody drove in a run.
Taylor Morgan led Piedmont at the plate in the opener with a 2-for-3 performance.
Pitcher B.J. Cofer took the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits in six innings.
