Berry Closes 1st Season With Winning Record, 4th Straight Win

Box Score

Jenny Miller scored six goals, including what turned out to be the game winner, to lead Berry to a 17-15 victory at Birmingham-Southern Saturday and give the Vikings a winning record as it closed its inaugural women's lacrosse season.

Berry held a 10-4 halftime lead, but the Panthers climbed back into the contest in the second half, eventually pulling to within a goal on two occasions in the final six minutes of the contest.  But Berry would answer both times BSC made it a one-goal game and held off the Panthers' late charge.

Miller's final goal came on a free position shot with 4:38 remaining that gave Berry a 16-14 lead.  BSC's Hailey Massa scored with 2:45 left but Brittany Coughlan scored her third goal of the game with 11 seconds to left to seal the win for Berry.

Miller and Coughlan were among six different players to score for the Vikings.  Senior Anya Dziurzynski, playing in her final collegiate game, tallied five goals, while Kristan Dziurzynski, Kaylee Lane and Blair Shupenko scored once each.

Miller and Anya Dziurzynski also dished out a pair of assists apiece.

Lynday Griffin led Birmingham-Southern with four goals.

The shot totals were identical, with each team firing 28 shots in the game.  BSC held a miniscule 31-30 ground ball advantage.  Despite the ground ball deficit, Berry's defense over the course of the contest may have been the difference, as the Vikings held BSC to just 9-for-23 on clearing attempts and forced 32 Panthers turnovers.

Berry goalie Taylor Martin recorded four saves.  BSC's Katie Bates had nine.

The Vikings closed the season with four consecutive victories and an 8-7 overall record.
