Lacey Herring set a school record by belting three home runs as Berry defeated LaGrange 7-0 in the first game of a softball doubleheader in LaGrange Sunday evening. The Panthers returned the favor with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Herring went 3-for-4 in the opener and drove in five of the Vikings' seven runs. Two of the home runs left the yard, and the other was an inside-the-park homer.
Holly Todd added to the offensive outburst with a pair of hits and two runs.
Vikings' hurler Caillee Shamoun earned the victory. She struck out four batters in a complete game effort.
In the second game, LaGrange's Courtney Beshel hit a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the ballgame.
The Vikings held a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but LaGrange put together a four-run inning to tie the game and set up Beshel's heroics in the seventh.
Blaze Wilson and Kristen Stoll led the Vikings with three hits apiece in the second game. Stoll also drove in a run, while Wilson doubled and scored twice.
Chelsea Usher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Todd drove in a pair of runs.
Katie Ison led LaGrange at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance.
Kayla Folds was credited with the win for LaGrange. She pitched one inning and walked one batter.
Shamoun took the loss in the second game. She allowed three runs on four hits in one inning of relief. Shamoun struck out two batters.
After more than a month on the road, the Vikings finally return home April 2 to host a doubleheader against Piedmont at South Ford Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
