Box Score ROME, Ga. - Berry outscored Carthage (Wisc.) in the second half, but the Vikings were unable to overcome a rough opening 30 minutes in a 14-8 loss at Ford Field on the Berry campus Friday.
Carthage scored eight consecutive goals to close out the first half after Wes Goldsberry accepted a pass from Nat Morey and fired it past Red Men goalie Spencer Curley just 1:37 into the contest.
The 1-0 lead would be the last time the Vikings would hold the advantage, as Carthage would head into halftime with an 8-1 lead.
Berry's Marshall Henderson opened the scoring in the third period less than a minute in, but Carthage would answer with two of its own to go ahead 10-2.
Goldsberry found the net again off an assist from Bryan Byers with 4:22 to play in the third period to cut into Carthage's lead, but the Red Men would score three of the next four goals to go up 13-4.
The Vikings' score during that stretch came from CJ McRae, thanks to an assist from Bryan Byers with 8:53 remaining in the game.
McRae's goal was the first of five goals scored by the Vikings in the final period, a stretch in which Berry outscored Carthage 5-3 and gave the Vikes a 7-6 scoring advantage in the game's final 30 minutes.
Berry's other goals in the fourth period came from Byers, who scored two in the period, Mike Voso and Michael Emanuelo.
The final three goals came in the game's final 38 seconds.
The Vikings scored on eight of the 19 shots they took in the game, but were badly outshot by the Red Men, who took 45 shots in the game, with at least 10 coming in every period.
Berry goalie Jordan Boreman recorded 18 saves in the contest, and joined Goldsberry and Tommy Edgeworth with four ground balls apiece.
Keegan Bowman and Mason Poage led Carthage with four goals apiece. Curley recorded five saves.
The Vikings are scheduled to return to action March 25 at Centre College.
