Lacey Herring's three-run homer highlighted a five run seventh inning as Berry defeated Maryville 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday in Maryville, Tenn. The Vikings earned a sweep with a 12-3 victory behind Kristen Stoll's five runs batted in in the nightcap.
The second game was stopped after six innings due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
The Vikings and Scots were locked in a 3-3 tie heading into the seventh inning of the first game, but a singly by Jessica Washington was sandwiched in between a pair of Maryville errors to load the bases with one out. Stoll then delivered a two-run single to left field that scored Washington and Blaze Wilson. Herring followed with her three-run shot to left-center field that broke the game open.
Maryville's run in the bottom of the seventh proved to be too little, too late.
Berry pounded out eight hits in the game, including two each from Washington, Herring and Wilson. Along with Stoll's two RBIs and Herring's three, Wilson also drove in a run.
Berry's Caillee Shamoun (1-1) pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out six batters and walking just one in seven innings. All four of Maryville's runs were unearned. Shamoun scattered seven hits.
Maryville pitcher Sarah Reeder took the loss. She allowed eight runs, but just two were earned.
In the second game, Stoll went 3-for-4 and Washington went 3-for-3 to lead the Vikings (2-2). Three of Stoll's RBIs came on a bases-clearing double in the second inning that gave Berry a 4-3 lead. At that point, Stoll, who drove in a run with an RBI single in the first, had accounted for all of the team's runs.
The Vikes added a two more runs in the third, scoring on an error and again on a wild pitch. Three innings later, Berry would put together the six-run inning that would doom the Scots. Along with Woody's home run, Berry received RBIs from Washington, Stoll and Denice Aleman. The other run scored on an error.
Berry outhit Maryville 15-4 in the game.
Andrea Cole (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on four hits and seven walks in six innings. She fanned four batters.
Maryville starter Jessica McCarter took the loss. She allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk in four innings. McCarter struck out three batters.
Berry returns to action Saturday, when it hosts a doubleheader against Covenant at noon.
