In a match with its fair share of opportunities, neither team was able to capitalize as Berry and Maryville played to a scoreless tie in front of a large crowd at the traditional Mountain Day game at Ford Field Saturday.

The visiting Scots had most of their scoring opportunities after halftime, but were thwarted by Berry goalkeeper Kevin Madigan.  Maryville's best scoring opportunity may have come with about 17:30 remaining in regulation, when Madigan made a spectacular diving save. The sophomore leapt to punch away Tom Webster's free kick, which then bounced off the top crossbar.

"Kevin's just one of the best keepers around," Berry coach Richard Vardy said. "He gives the defense confidence."

Berry outshot Maryville 18-17. Freshman Zak Wallingford had six shots (one on goal) while fellow freshman Christian Fulbright had four (one on goal).

Madigan finished with six saves while Marvyille goalkeeper Zach Gutzman finished with three, including a match-saving diving stop late in regulation.

It was a physical match that featured five yellow cards, three of which were given to Maryville players.

"It wasn't anything terrible," Vardy said of the physicality of the game.

The Vikings return to action a week from today, Oct. 8 when they travel to California to play UC Santa Cruz at 5 p.m.
