Women's Cross Country, Track & Field Announce Newcomers

ROME, Ga. – Berry head track & field coach Luke Syverson and head cross country coach Paul Deaton have announced the addition of 14 new athletes set to join the women's teams this year.

"This is one of the most balanced classes we have had with seven athletes set to join us for both cross country and track and seven more who will represent Berry track & field in the spring," Syverson said. "We are excited about the depth this group of women will provide our program and many of them will contribute right away as freshmen at the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) championship level. They are all a great fit for Berry. They are strong in the classroom and involved in many other areas including community service. We are excited to see what all of them accomplish in the next four years here at Berry."

Kamman Brown

Canton, GA/Cherokee High School

PR's: 5' HJ

Brown is a three-year track & field letter winner. She competed at the 2017 GHSA State Track & Field Championships in the high jump. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club. Kamman is the daughter of Keith and Davida Brown and was coached by Gregory Anderson at CHS. She intends to major in Animal Science while at Berry.

 

Emily Driscoll

Calhoun, GA/Calhoun High School

PR's: 13:05 3200m/21:16 XC 5k

Driscoll is a three-time qualifier for the GHSA State Track & Field Championships in the 3,200m finishing 9th in 2018. She also represented Calhoun at both the 2014 and 2015 GHSA State Cross Country Championships. In addition to running, Emily was an accomplished swimmer, served as a team captain in 2018, and earned the Coach's Award. She was also honored as Calhoun's Wendy's High School Heisman and was a first team All-Gordon County selection in 2018. A strong academic student in the classroom, she was an AP scholar, served as VP of Calhoun's Beta Club and treasurer of the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of John and Suzanne Driscoll and was coached by Brant Murry at CHS. Emily intends to major in Mathematics while at Berry.

 

Ashlee Golden

Tifton, GA/Tift County High School

PR's: 2:47 800m/13:17 3200m/22:03 XC 5k

Ashlee is a four-time qualifier for the GHSA 6A/7A State Cross Country Championships. She was named the Cross Country Team MVP in 2016. Ashlee was also involved with the swim team, soccer team, and Beta Club. In addition to her time running, she has logged over 300 hours of community service and graduated with Superior Honors from Tift County HS. She is the daughter of Richard and Kelley Golden and was coached by Mike Beeman and Kristen McElroy at TCHS. She is Undecided in her major at Berry.

 

Mary Ashford Hyde

Vestavia, AL/Vestavia Hills High School

PR's: 16.38 100H

Hyde was a three-time qualifier for the AHSAA Indoor State T&F Championships in the 60m hurdles and qualified for the AHSAA Outdoor Championships in the 100m hurdles all four years of her high school career. In addition to track & field, she was also a member and captain of the AHSAA Lacrosse State Championship team in 2018. She was on the Athletic Honor Roll all four years and earned multiple school and team awards. Mary Ashford was a member of the National Honor Society in addition to being in the NHS for Spanish, Math, and Chorus. She is the daughter of Kimberly and Lance Lenoir and was coached by Brett Huber at VHHS. She is undecided in her major at Berry.

 

MaKenzie Johnson

Lakeland, FL/Lakeland Christian School

PR's: 12:35 3200m/20:44 XC 5k

MaKenzie was a two time FHSAA State Cross Country Championships qualifier both of her years of competing in cross country and track for Lakeland Christian. She was a team captain, named Most Improved for cross country, and helped lead her track team to district and regional titles. Johnson also excelled in the classroom, as she was a National Merit Scholar and graduated with Highest Honors from Lakeland Christian. She is the daughter of Joel and Sandy Johnson and was coached by Milton Lyons at LCS. She intends to major in Chemistry while at Berry.

 

Alexandria Kinney

Canton, GA/Cherokee High School

PR's: 13.73 100m/28.78 200m

Kinney is two-year track & field letter winner and was a member of the school record Sprint Medley Relay, Distance Medley Relay, and the 4x400m relay. She was also involved in the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Chorus, and National Spanish Honor Society. She is the daughter of Dwight and Marcena Kinney and was coached by Gregory Anderson at CHS. She intends to major in Pre-Med while at Berry.

 

Mikele Mays

Rome, GA/Divine Child High School, MI

PR's: 2.27 800m/5:51 1600m/19:50 XC 5k

Mayes competed at both the 2016 and 2017 MHSAA State Cross Country Championships. She helped lead her team to a 5th place finish at the 2017 meet after finishing 7th at the 2016 meet. She finished 6th in the 800m at the 2017 MITCA State Team Track & Field Championships in addition to helping her team to an 8th place finish in the 4x800m. She was named a 2016 cross country team captain and was named Most Improved in 2017. Mikele was involved in Forensics, Medical Club and Varsity Club at Divine Child HS. Mikele is the daughter of Flavian and Theodora Chukwundi and was coached by Godon Macintosh at DCHS. She intends to major in Political Science while at Berry.

 

Ashleigh Meeker

Ball Ground, GA/Creekview High School

PR's: 2:29 800m/20:40 XC 5k

Ashleigh comes from a strong Creekview program and was a member of their 2015 cross country team that placed 3rd at the 5A GHSA State Championships and was the team runner up at the 2017 6A State Cross Country Championships. She is also a member of the school record 4x800m relay team. While at Creekview, she was a scholar-athlete and an honors graduate while also being involved in Beta Club and C.A.R.E.S Club. Ashleigh is the daughter of Robert and Jennifer Meeker, and was coached by Travis Pope at CHS. She plans to major in Pre-Vet while at Berry.

 

Kennedy Moore

Murfreesboro, TN/Riverdale High School

PR's: 13.04 100m/27.00 200m/1:01.17 400m

Kennedy, a standout basketball player for Riverdale and Women's Basketball signee for Berry, looks to also compete on the Vikings track team in the spring. A strong middle sprinter, Moore is poised to build upon her times out of high school.

 

Charis Morgan

Rome, GA/Homeschool

PR's: 2:46 800m/5:30 1500m/20:19 5k XC

Charis is a four-time GICAA State Cross Country Championship qualifier winning the State Cross Country individual title in 2015 after finishing 4th in both 2013 and 2014 and taking 7th in 2016. Her 1st place finish in 2015 helped lead her team to the overall state championship title. Charis was also named to the Rome/Floyd County All-Area Cross Country team all four years of her high school career. She is a strong academic student-athlete who was dual-enrolled at Berry during her senior year. Morgan sat out what would have been her freshman year at Berry and will join the team and school this fall. Charis intends to major in exercise science while at Berry. She is the daughter of Mark and Elizabeth Morgan.

 

Eva Proels

Suwanee, GA/Lambert High School

PR's: 9' PV

Proels was a top four finisher at both the County and Regional Championships this past season. She comes from a competitive gymnastics background and has helped lead her team to three consecutive top three finishes at the GHSA State Gymnastics Championships. She was team captain of both her track and gymnastics teams this past year as well as earning Honors Student Athlete accolades. She was a member of the Beta Club, HOSA, and co-founder of the Astronomy and Astrophysics Club at Lambert. Eva is the daughter of Alex and Cheri Proels and was coached by Eric Negley at Lambert. She intends to major in Pre-Med while at Berry.

 

Leanna Ritchie

Mountain Brook, AL/Mountain Brook High School

PR's: 2:37 800m/5:50 1600m/22:27 XC 5k

Ritchie was a member of arguably the most dominant Cross Country program in the state of Alabama the past four years as Mountain Brook finished 3rd in 2017, runner-up in 2016, and were back to back State Champions in 2014 and 2015. Ritchie was a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, and the Art Honor Society. Leanna is the daughter of Henry and Margaret Ritchie and was coached by Michael McGovern at MBHS. She intends to major in Nursing while at Berry.

 

Denae Rivera

Marietta, GA/Dominion Christian

PR's: 37'1 SP

Rivera is an athletic thrower who has competed in multiple events for DCA. In 2018, she finished in the top three in both shot and discus at the GISA State Track & Field Championships after a 5th and 8th place finish in 2017. She is also the school record holder in both events. In the classroom, Denae was a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club and was heavily involved in areas such as band, theater, and creative writing club. Denae is the daughter of Kendall Williams and was coached by both Javier Jenkins and King Edwards at Dominion Christian. She intends to major in Animal Science/Pre-Vet while at Berry.

 

Patricia Grace Schumacher

Acworth, GA/Dominion Christian

PR's: 12.84 100m/26.43 200m/15'8 LJ/35'8 TJ

Schumacher was a three-time qualifier for the GISA State Track & Field Championships in multiple events over her high school career including winning the 2017 State Championship title in the triple jump in 2017. She was also a state qualifier in the 100m, 200m, long jump, 4x100, and 4x400m during her career. She was named Team MVP three times during her high school career, including her 8th grade year, and was a team captain last year. Because of her outstanding career, she was named Dominion Christian's Athlete of the Year for 2017-18. Off the track, she was involved in Beta Club, student government, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Grace is the daughter of Keith and Carrolyn Schumacher and was coached by Javier Jenkins and King Edwards at DCA. She intends to major in Business while at Berry.
