MOUNT BERRY. Ga. – Berry College women’s cross country runners Alainna Chretien and Abby Carroll are preparing this week to run at the NCAA DIII National Championship Race in Eslah, Ill., on Saturday.
Carroll and Chretien each finished in the top 12 at the regional meet last weekend to earn their spots in the National Championship. Chretien ran a 21:30.04, finishing fifth overall, while Carroll finished 11th overall in 22:02.00.
“I am very excited to represent Berry at such a big race,” Chretien said. "It is my last cross country race, so I am ready to run and I am glad I will have Abby to run with me.”
After strong competition at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional meet, runners will race for the chance to earn All-American honors, with everyone toeing the line with a shot at the title.
“I have been so focused on just getting to nationals, that I have not even thought about a true strategy for the race,” Carroll said. “I am really hoping to get up there with strong competition and just have fun running with talented, fast people.”
The women’s race will also feature Southern Athletic Association’s own Annie Rodenfels and Courtney Gibson of Centre, as well as Ashley Litoff of Rhodes, all of whom earned some of top spots at regionals.
“NCAA Division III Cross Country Nationals has a reputation for being the most exciting cross country meet there is,” Head Coach Paul Deaton said. “It is certainly an honor for Alainna and Abby to compete in the National Championships this weekend. Even so, they are prepared to do more than celebrate on Saturday. They can compete with the best.”
The women’s race will be at 1:15 p.m., with live updates posted to Twitter @BerryXCTF.
