Berry Swim Teams Finish Seventh at ASC Championships
Berry's men's and women's swim teams each finished seventh this weekend at the Appalachian Swimming Conference championships, hosted by Union College in Barbourville, Ky.
Berry coach Paul Flinchbaugh was pleased with his team's peformance in its final ASC Championships before the team moves into the new Southern Athletic Association in 2012-13.
"The entire team dropped time and posted personal best times," Flinchbaugh said. "The seventh-place performances were the highest conference placing ever for Berry's swim teams, and on the final day, the entire men's team qualified for the finals or consolation finals."
On the women's side, Ruth Pappas placed fourth in both the 400 yard individual medley and the 200 individual medley, setting school records in each event. She swam 2:15.41 in the 200 and 4:46.19 in the 400.
Rachel Sandoval also set a pair of school records, finishing fifth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.34 seconds and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle by posting a time of 25.01 seconds in that event.
Kaitlin O'Brien also set a school record when she swam the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 18:46.71 to finish sixth.
Julie Zimmerman finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:28.02.
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Zimmerman, O'Brien, Pappas and Sandoval set a school record with a time of 8:14.03 and finished seventh in the event.
"The team wrapped up a fantastic season, bidding farewell to senior Sarah Larson, who swam in her final conference championship with a significant contribution to the women's team's scoring, and continued to be a great leader throughout the meet."
The Vikings' Conor Monaghan won a pair of individual championships, becoming the first Berry swimmer to claim a conference crown. He won both the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle, setting school and conference records in each event in the process.
Monaghan swam the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 1:51.67, and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:41.22.
He also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 50.23 seconds and joined David Lutomski, Adam Jarrell and Graydon McCrite on the 800-yard freestyle relay team that finished second with a time of 7:02.75. Both of those times also set school records.
Lutomski, Jarrell and McCrite also performed well on their own. Lutomski set a school record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.62 to finish sixth in that event, and also finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.93.
Jarrell broke Berry's top time in the 400 yard individual medley, posting a mark of 4:25.89 to place eighth.
McCrite finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, setting a school record in the event with a time of 21.52 seconds.
Along with the record setting 800-yard freestyle relay team, Berry men also set school records in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay.
