Record-Setting Performances Highlight Swim Meet
ROME, Ga. - A record-setting day in the pool for Berry swimmers Graydon McCrite, Andrew Beumer and Kaitlin O'Brien and several first-place finishes for the Vikings highlighted the double-dual meet between Berry, Sewanee and Milligan Saturday at Berry's Cage Center.
McCrite broke three of his own school records, and Beumer broke one of his own to lead Berry's men's team. McCrite won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.33 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.25 seconds to set new school marks. He also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, but his time of 1:49.94 in the event was more than a second faster than his old team record in that event.
Beumer easily won the men's 1,000-yard freestyle, but he did anything but cruise to a win. Instead, he swam the fastest race in Berry history, clocking in with a time of 10:49.41, more than two seconds faster than the previous school record that he set earlier this season.
O'Brien was the other record setter for Berry Saturday, as she also broke her own mark in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning the women's race with a time of 11:37.67, more than 13 seconds faster than the previous record she set earlier in the year.
McCrite, Beumer and O'Brien were far from the only Vikings to win their race, though. Molly Scott won the women's 100-yard backstroke by more than four seconds with a time of 1:06.60. In the women's 200-yard butterfly, Kelly Dickerson finished in a time of 2:20.70, more than six seconds ahead of her teammate, second-place finisher Julie Zimmerman, who finished with a time of 2:27.16.
Rachel Sandoval would pick up a pair of first-ploace finishes, as well, winning the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.30 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.03 seconds.
In the dual meets, Berry's women defeated Milligan 159.00 - 43.00, but fell to Sewanee 159.00 - 101.00. Sewanee defeated Milligan 186.00 - 40.00.
On the men's side, Berry fell to Sewanee 154.00-74.00, and to Milligan 109.00 - 104.00. Sewanee defeated Milligan 161.00 - 72.00.
The Vikings are scheduled to wrap up the season Feb. 18-19 at the Appalachian Swim Conference championship meet.
