Berry Ends Season on High Note With 2-0 Win at Young Harris
Fischer, Hatheway Help Each Other in Berry's Win
Berry's Kim Fischer and Leah Hatheway hooked up for goals twice in the first half to lead the Lady Vikings to a 2-0 victory over Young Harris in Berry's season finale Tuesday in Young Harris, Ga.
Fischer scored the opener in the 14th minute on an assist from Hatheway. Fischer returned the favor in the 28th minute, assisting on Hatheway's team-leading 16th goal of the season.
Young Harris, coached by former Berry standout Kathy Insel Brown, who was a starting defender on Berry's 1993 NAIA national championship team, were forced to play the final 13 minutes a player down after Cat Durham received her second yellow card of the match.
But by that time, the Lady Vikings (12-3-1) had taken control of the match, overwhelming the NCAA Division II Mountain Lions (10-7-1) with a 16-shot advantage and taking seven corner kicks to none by Young Harris.
Berry fired off 20 shots in the contest, with 11 coming on target. YHC attemptd four shots, three of which were on target.
Berry goalkeeper Brooke Clement tallied three saves en route to recording her fourth consecutive clean sheet, and the sixth in the past seven matches.
The match was similar to many played by the Lady Vikings this season, with the defense holding strong and allowing Hatheway, Fischer and the other forwards plenty of opportunities to put the ball in the net.
Berry, which has recorded a winning record in all 26 seasons in program history, averaged three goals per game, while giving up an average of just 0.54 goals per contest in 2011.
