Hatheway's Golden Goal Gives Berry 2-1 Win Over Methodist
Leah Hatheway Scores Match Winner In Second Overtime To Give Lady Vikings Win
Leah Hatheway scored her second goal of the match in the 107th minute, giving Berry a 2-1 victory over Methodist University Friday evening in Fayetteville, N.C., in the Lady Vikings' first match at the Methodist Fall Tournament.
Hatheway's game-winning goal came after Keri McGinnis came away with the ball after a flurry in the penalty area then dished to Hatheway, who put it away for the win.
The two-goal performance by Hatheway was the second in as many matches. She also scored twice in the Lady Vikings' 2-1 win over Sewanee on Sept. 8. In fact, Hatheway has scored all four of Berry's goals this season.
The senior forward's match-winner was made necessary after Methodist forced overtime with a 76th minute score by Danielle Minichello, who found the net after receiving a cross from the left side, that tied the score 1-1. Brooke Corley and Abbey Howe were each credited with assists on Minichello's goal.
Berry (2-1) held a 1-0 advantage at halftime, thanks to Hatheway's goal in the 26th minute, which came after she received a pass from Ally Byrd that slipped past the Methodist defense.
"We played well in the first half, and not very well in the second half," Berry coach Lorenzo Canalis said. "But we played hard in overtime and were able to come away with the win. I'm proud of our players for getting the win."
Hatheway just missed on two other scoring opportunities. She hit the crossbar with a shot in the 16th minute, and nailed the post early in the second half.
Berry dominated the offensive statistics, outshooting Methodist 21-6. Ten of Berry's shots came goal, compared to just two shots on goal by Methodist.
Vikings' goalkeeper Brooke Clement finished with two saves.
Berry is scheduled to return to action Saturday, when they conclude their appearance in Methodist Fall Invitational with a match against North Carolina Wesleyan at 3 p.m.
