Berry Closes Season With 3-0 Win over Birmingham-Southern

by Liz Jones

ROME, Ga.-- Berry's women's soccer team closed its 2010 season with a 3-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern College at Ford Soccer Field on the Berry campus Saturday.

Kristen Brooks, Ally Byrd and Kim Fischer tallied the goals for the Lady Vikings.

In the 21st minute, Brooks gave Berry a 1-0 lead by scoring her goal on a scramble in the goal box. The original shot that started the play came off the foot of Leah Hatheway, who had a goal attempt from the right wing.

After several back-and-forth goal opportunities between the Lady vikings and the Lady Panthers, Byrd took away BSC's hope of equalizing just seconds before the end of the first half. Byrd took control of a low  clearance by the Panther defense and fired a shot from nearly 30 yards out, dropping down just over the unsuspecting BSC goalkeeper, Jordan Papas.

Only a minute and thirty seconds into the second half, Kim Fischer mimicked Byrd's goal, taking another unanticipated long distance shot for Berry's third and final goal of the game.

Berry goalkeeper Rebekah Bullock made six saves, and Berry's back line helped defend against 13 shots.

The shutout brought the Lady Vikings' final record to 9-5-2.

This game was also the last for Berry seniors Rebekah Bullock, Lindsey Caldwell, Jenna Davis, Kate Ross, and Courtney Weber.
