MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – Led by the newly named coaching staff of Thomas Johnson and Ashley Southern, the Berry College women’s basketball team aspires to improve upon their 11-15 record following the 2016-17 campaign. The Vikings will open season play at home against Brevard College on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Head Coach Johnson will lead the women’s team after a four-year stint as the Berry College men’s basketball team assistant coach, during which he helped the Vikings earn nine All-Southern Athletic Association (SAA) and SAA Academic Honor Roll selections, including a league Newcomer-of-the-Year in his first season. Assistant coach Southern accompanies Johnson, following her standout basketball career at both the collegiate and professional levels.
The Vikings will be led by the sole returning All-SAA team member: Alex Weems. A junior forward, Weems earned All-SAA first team recognition last season after finishing the year averaging 13.9 points per game, as well as 7.6 rebounds per game, while posting seven double-doubles for Berry. Weems is accompanied by returning Vikings Ashley McKee and Nia Smith, who each averaged just over five points per game last season. Seven freshmen will fight for time on the court as well, giving way to a competitive practice atmosphere that will push the Vikings to be their best come game time.
Johnson joined Weems and sophomore Eveline Parsons as they discussed the upcoming season. Watch the video below.
