Men's Cross Country, Track & Field Announce 2018-19 Recruits

ROME, Ga. — Berry head track & field coach Luke Syverson and head cross country coach Paul Deaton have announced the addition of 13 new runners to join the men's squad this year.

The class will give added depth to the men's cross country and track & field teams that finished 3rd and 4th respectively at this past year's Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships meets.

"This class is our largest men's class we have brought in and also our most talented overall on the track & field side for sure," Syverson said. "We add a lot more depth to our already strong short sprints group and are able to replace and add a few more conference scorers in the hurdles, throws and pole vault. Several of these young men will start off by representing Berry on the football team this fall."

Brief bios of the newcomers can be found below.


Jason Bell

Powder Springs, GA/Hillgrove High School

PR's: 4:51 1600m/10:25 3200m/17:16 XC 5k

Jason was a member of Hillgrove's Regional 4x800m champion team and also was the 2017 Area 3 7A XC Champion. He served as both the cross country and the track & field team captain his senior year. Bell was on the academic honor roll all four years and a member of the Latin Honor Society.

Jason is the son of Jerry and Sarah Bell and was coached by Jonathan Gambrell at HHS. He intends to major in exercise science while at Berry.

 

Alex Dalton

Knoxville, TN/Christian Academy of Knoxville

PR's: 43'2 SP/119'9 Discus

Alex, a 3-sport athlete for CAK, is a Viking football signee who earned four varsity letters in football and three in both basketball and track & field. Alex was CAK's 2018 Wendy's Heisman winner and was a 2018 TSSAA State Track & Field Championship qualifier on both the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams. He was a team captain in football and was All-Region in both 2016 and 2017. Off the field, Alex was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with a 4.2 GPA.

Dalton is the son of Tony and Felicia Dalton and was coached by Travis Mozingo at CAK. He intends to major in business while at Berry.

 

David Freeman

Newnan, GA/Trinity Christian-Sharpsburg

PR's: 2:05 800m/5:00 1600m/17:35 XC 5k

Freeman is a four-time GISA Track & Field State Championship qualifier in multiple events finishing in 5th place in the 800m at the 2016 meet and was a member of the runner-up 4x400m relay at both the 2016 and 2018 championships. He is a member of both the 4x400 and 4x800m relay school record team and was named team captain for both the cross country and track team this past year. David was also a four-time qualifier for the GISA State Cross Country Championships, helping lead his team to back to back runner-up team finishes at the 2016 and 2017 State meet. In addition to athletics, David served as the Student Council Vice President, was an honors graduate, and is an Eagle Scout.

David is the son of Garrett and Cassie Freeman and was coached by Garrett Freeman and JP Weaver at Trinity. He intends to major in business management while at Berry.

 

Braden Jarvis

Rock Spring, GA/Gordon Lee High School

PR's: 13' PV/20'3 LJ

Jarvis is a three-sport letterman in football, wrestling, and track. He is also a Vikings football signee who will be joining the track & field team in the spring. Braden was the 2018 GHSA 1A state champion in the pole vault after finishing as the runner-up in 2017. Even with his success in football and track, Jarvis is one of the top wrestlers in the south having gone 43-0 and winning the GHSA State Championship title for his weight class. Jarvis was honored as Walker County Athlete of the Year as well as Trojan of the Year for Gordon Lee. He is also a leader having served as a team captain for all three sports his senior year.

Braden is the son of Tim and Christy Jarvis and was coached by Dan Roberts. He intends to major in mathematics while at Berry.

 

Malik LeBlanc

Douglasville, GA/Chapel Hill High School

PR's: 11.52 100m/43.88 300H

Malik is a two-time GHSA 4A Track & Field State Championship qualifier in the 4x100m relay helping lead his team to the 4x100 State Championship title in 2018. He was team captain in both football and track as well as being an Athletic Honor Roll recipient three times. He was named to both All-County and All-Region Football teams and will compete as a member of the Berry football team in the fall. While at Chapel Hill, Malik was also involved as the president of Project Manhood.

Malik is the son of John LeBlanc and Shondra Whitehurst-LeBlanc and was coached by Kelly Williams while at Chapel Hill. He intends to major in engineering at Berry.

 

Collin Mathis

Rome GA/Unity Christian

PR's: 11.50 100m/23.60 200m

Mathis was the runner-up at the 2018 GICAA State Track & Field Championships this past season in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay after finishing 3rd and 4th in the 100m and 200m at the 2017 State Meet. He was the team captain for both track and football during his junior and senior year. Off the field, Collin was a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and regularly made the Honor Roll.

Collin is the son of Matt and Rebekah Mathis. He was coached by Brandon Moon while at Unity. He intends to major in accounting while at Berry.

 

Jared Ogle

Crawford, GA/Oglethorpe County High School

PR's: 47'6 SP/129'6 Discus

Ogle is a two-time qualifier for the GHSA 2A State Track & Field Championships. He finished 7th in the shot put and 8th in the discus at the 2018 meet after being Regional Champion in 2017 and runner-up in 2018. He was honored as his team's field event MVP the past two seasons. In addition to track, Jared earned three varsity letters in football. He was actively involved in Beta Club, National Honor Society and was an FCA leader.

He is the son of Donnie and Kathy Ogle and was coached by Todd Poucher at OCHS. Jared intends to major in nursing while at Berry.

 

John "Alex" Posey

Luthersville, GA/Flint River Academy

PR's: 11.36 100m/22.85 200m/ 42.00 300H

Posey is a two-time GISA State Champion in the 300H and also was the 200m GISA State Champion this past season after finishing 5th in 2017. He also led both the 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams at state where he anchored the 4x100m team to back-to-back State Championship titles in 2017 and 2018. His team holds the GISA State meet record in the event. Alex also helped lead his FRA football team to the 2016 State Championship title serving as a team captain and earning All-Region and All-State honors. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was active in Key Club.

Alex is the son of Chris and Chasity Posey and was coached by Russ Durand at FRA. He intends to major in creative technologies while at Berry.

 

Austin Schriver

Peachtree City, GA/Starr's Mill High School

PR's: 11.06 100m/22.86 200m

Schriver is the school record holder in the 100m and the 2018 Region Champion. He had a standout football career including helping lead his team to back-to-back region titles in 2016 and 2017. He is a Panther Award winner and Sprinter of the Year award winner for Starrs' Mill and was a team captain of the football team. In addition to his accomplishments on the field, Austin was also an Honor Roll student and active member of FCA. He will also be playing football for the Vikings in the fall.

Austin is the son of Lynn Schriver and was coached by Chad Walker at SMHS. He plans on majoring in economics while at Berry.

 

Jonathan Walk

Acworth, GA/Allatoona High School

PR's: 15.58 110H/41.95 300H/6' HJ

Walk was a multi-sport athlete for the Buccaneers having earned three varsity letters in both football and track. He is a Vikings football signee who will hurdle in the spring. He was Region champion in both the 110H and 300H.

Jonathan is the son of Dee and Shaunda Walk and was coached by Coach Parsons at AHS. He intends to major in business management while at Berry.

 

Garrison Wheeler

Signal Mountain, TN/Signal Mountain High School

PR's: 2:06 800m/4:41 1600m/9:55 3200m/16:17 5k

Wheeler is a three-time TSSAA State Cross Country Championship qualifier and finished 8th at the 2017 TSSAA State Cross Country Championships. He was the 2018 runner up in the 3,200m at the TSSAA State Track & Field Championships and helped lead his team to the 4x800m state title at that same meet. Garrison also was a member of the 2018 Tenn. Indoor State Championships DMR runner-up team. He was the team captain of both cross country and track his senior year. Garrison was equally successful in the classroom earning IB scholar honors. He was a member of the National Honor Society, and active in both the Beta and Leo club. He also served as the Student Body President at SMHS.

Garrison is the son of Trey and Michelle Wheeler and was coached by Tony Young while at Signal Mountain. He intends to major in biochemistry and exercise science while at Berry.

 

Jordan Wilson

Dallas, GA/Hiram High School

PR's: 49.77 400m/21.94 200m

Wilson is a two-time qualifier for the GHSA State Track & Field Championships in the 400m and finished 4th at the 2018 Georgia Meet of Champions. He served as the track team captain in 2018 and was also named team MVP this past season. In addition to a standout track career, Jordan also excelled on the football field for Hiram and will be suiting up for the Vikings this fall. He was a team captain in football and was an All-Region defensive back. Off the field, Jordan was an Honors Graduate and the Vice-President of Skills USA at Hiram.

Jordan is the son of Derrick and Yolinda Wilson and was coached in by Michael Owens at Hiram. He intends to major in sports administration while at Berry.

 

Kelvin Wilson

Chattanooga, TN/East Hamilton High School

PR's: 11.29 100m/22.90 200m

Kelvin is a three-time qualifier for the TSSAA State Track & Field Championships and helped lead his relay team to an 8th place finish at the 2018 Championships. Kelvin also served as a team captain during both his junior and senior years. He is a member of the National Honor Society and was active in the Big Brother-Little Brother program at his school.

Kelvin is the son of Moreland Wilson and Dee Holmes and was coached by Gerald Jones while at East Hamilton. He intends to major in animal science while at Berry.
