Mountain Day Win for Vikings
by Liz Jones
ROME, Ga.—Jorg Bergmann and Dino Ceric each scored for Berry as the Vikings earned a 2-0 win over Southern Wesleyan on Mountain Day at Ford Soccer Field Saturday. The win was the fifth in a row for Berry.
Ceric's goal came just minutes before the end of the first half, when Daniel Wartner collected a pass sent down the right side of the field and sent the ball into the box where Bergmann immediately dropped the ball behind him to Ceric's feet. Off his instep, Ceric delivered the ball into the net with little pressure from Southern Wesleyan's defense.
Bergmann's goal came in the 49th minute. Jan Weeg barely got a head on Shane Moroney's throw-in from 30 yards out, but it was enough for the ball to ricochet to Bergmann, who drove the ball into the net for the final tally.
The Vikings' defense also proved to be pivotal, rarely allowing Southern Wesleyan's speedy forwards to make a run.
Berry goalkeepers Andrew Ryndak and Kevin Madigan shared credit for the shutout, with both keepers making two saves each.
Berry improved to 6-1-0 with the win. While the Vikings are rolling, the Warriors conceded their fifth loss of the season, dropping their record to 3-5-2.
The Vikings will host Lee University this coming Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. on the Ford Soccer Field.
Note: Several former Vikings made their way to the match Saturday, even playing in an alumni game before the Berry-Southern Wesleyan contest. Among those attending the game was Momodou Conteh, Berry's all-time leading scorer and an All-American in 1979, 1980 and 1981.
