Vikings Open Men's Soccer Season With 2-0 Win over YHC
by Liz Jones
With the spector of Opening Night and a large crowd in attendance, Berry's men's soccer team rose to the occasion, winning their season opener against Young Harris College 2-0 at Ford Soccer Field Friday.
Senior captain Mike Davis and freshman Josh Hughes scored for Berry.
The goal that set the tone for the Vikings came in the 14th minute. Berry midfielder Dino Ceric started the play off of a free kick, sending the balla 30 yards into the eight-yard box where Davis made a diving header, delivering the ball into the right-side netting.
The freshmen class made its mark during the match. Off of a corner kick taken by Samer Hajmurad, Hughes also scored off of a header in the 72nd minute. Hughes led the team with three shots, accounting for a quarter of the team's 12 total shots.
Berry outshot Young Harris 12-8.
The match-up may have been closer than the score revealed, and the contest was a physical one. The referee administered Young Harris three yellow cards and two to Berry.
The Vikings improve their opening game record to 5-0-2 and continue the tradition since 2004 of scoring at least one goal in that game.
Berry will play at Mississippi College on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. and then Millsaps College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
