ROME, Ga. – In a battle of Vikings, Berry men's lacrosse prevailed, 13-6, against Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday afternoon at Ford Field. Berry scored nine of the game's final 11 goals.
Berry stretched its record to 2-0 for the first time in the program's three-year history. Berry led at halftime, 5-4.
Max Smerka's three-goal, one-assist performance included a behind-the-back shot with 11:23 left the fourth quarter, putting Berry up by a 10-4 margin. In addition, Bryan Byers and Kyle Lombardi each had two goals.
Kevin Gleason and Jesse Nagelberg each scored two goals apiece for Augustana (0-1).
Tied 4-4 in the second quarter, Berry tallied eight unanswered goals to take an eight-goal lead with under eight minutes remaining.
Berry held a 43-25 edge on shots and a 31-17 advantage in shots on goal. The team also finished with ahead in terms of groundballs, 38-32.
"It was outstanding, absolutely outstanding," said Head Coach Chris Delfausse of the team's performance. "That's what we've been trying to get out of these guys for two-and-a-half years now, and they put it all together. I'm just very proud of them in all respects."
Jordan Boreman made eleven saves for Berry to earn the win in goal. Cody Burgdorff had 18 saves for Augustana.
Berry will face Piedmont College on the road this upcoming Thursday. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
"It's always fun to get a rivalry started, so I know our guys are already excited," Delfuesse said. "Another effort like today, and hopefully we'll head into the spring break 3-0."
