MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – With a veteran group of seniors, the Berry College men’s basketball team will look to improve upon their 10-16 season last year, as they compete for another shot at a Southern Athletic Association title. The Vikings kick off the season with a matchup against Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala., on Tuesday.
Berry will round out tough out-of-conference competition during the month of November, with their first Southern Athletic Association contest on Wednesday, Nov. 29 against Oglethorpe.
Head coach Jeff Rogers returns to the helm for his fifth year, accompanied by newly named assistant coach Daniel Ellis. After three years of involvement with the basketball program, Ellis was named the program’s assistant last May.
The Vikings averaged 74.4 points per game last season, led by All-SAA honorees Caleb Johnson and Alton McCloud. Berry’s leading 2016 scorer, Johnson, returns for his senior season, after leading the Vikings with a 11.8 points-per-game average last year. Johnson also led the club in free throw shooting last season, averaging better than 3.0 free baskets per contest. McCloud returns to the court for his senior year of play as well, after finishing in the top five in conference in both total rebounds (148) and offensive boards (53) last season.
