MOUNT BERRY, Ga. — Berry College's Mamadou Soumahoro has been selected as a first-team Preseason All-American by D3football.com, the publication announced on Tuesday.
Soumahoro is the lone Southern Athletic Association (SAA) player to earn the recognition after leading the nation with 15 solo sacks a season ago.
The Lawrenceville, Ga., native had one of the most impressive seasons in all of NCAA Division III this year. He finished the season as an AFCA and D3football.com first-team All-American after leading the nation in solo sacks, adding 47 tackles and 20 tackles for a loss this season, good enough for No. 10 in the nation. He broke the Berry College single-season sack record after a five tackle, two sack performance over then No. 22 Hendrix. He also forced five fumbles (No. 4 in the nation) and recovered four (No. 2 in the nation).
The reigning SAA Defensive Player-of-the-Year anchored the Vikings defense which led the SAA in points allowed per game (20.2), rushing yards per game (66.6, ranked No. 3 in the nation) and sacks (32). He also led the Vikings defense during the pivotal Centre game to a program-record nine sacks.
The Vikings finished the year as SAA Champions after a program-best 9-1 record. Berry will open its season on September 2 at Maryville College.
