Berry Last Week: The first-year Vikings had some strong moments in the 44-7 loss at Wash U. Berry held an opponent scoreless in the first quarter for the first time. Quarterback Dale Jackson was 9-15 for 113 yards and no interceptions for the visitors. In the fourth quarter, he connected with Will Chomskis on a 17-yard strike for BC's lone touchdown. Jonathan Lewis carried 12 times for 51 yards to lead BC runners. Chomskis had 48 receiving yards on two receptions.
"We knew this was going to be a tough three-game stretch on the road," said Head Coach Tony Kunczewski . "We will continue to learn from our mistakes and build from the positives. There were some positives out there today. We have to learn to make plays when the opportunities present themselves. We were a play away from going in down nine points at the half. We will be better against Centre."
Defense/Punting: Mitchell Blanchard punted six time for 236 yards (39.3 average). He placed two kicks inside the 20-yard line and had a long punt of 52 yards. For the Berry defense, Anthony Batey continued his strong play. He made a team-best eight tackles with six solo stops. Bradley Brown had four tackles and an interception he returned for nine yards.
SAA Leaders: Linebacker Batey leads Berry and is second in the Southern Athletic Association with 10 tackles-per-game. Who does he trail? Centre College safety Ben Leahy averages 12 stops each outing. Leahy, a senior, also has one interception for 16 yards. Batey counters with a fumble recovery for 100 yards. Other Berryites in the top 15 tackles are: Bryce Bailey, 7.2 TPG/10th; Matt Farinella and Preston Stewart, 6.5 TPG/15th.
Blanchard is second in SAA punting, one-tenth yard behind the 39.6 of Rhodes' Pat Knight. The BC freshman has kicked 32 times for 1265 and a 39.5 average.
Forcing the Issue: Berry College is a plus-one on turnovers this year. The Vikings have committed seven miscues, but have forced eight turnovers. On fumbles recovered, BC is a plus-three. The Vikes have forced an impressive 10 fumbles in 2013 and are a whopping plus-four in this category.
