ROME, Ga. — Berry College's Zack Walch and Spence Johns have both been placed on the D3baseball.com Team of the Week for the first time in their career after helping the Vikings to a 3-1 week.
Johns, a freshman pitcher from Dacula, Ga., also earned his first career Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Pitcher of the Week nod yesterday, keeping his perfect 0.00 ERA unblemished and earning a pair of wins to help Berry improve to 9-4 on the year. Johns earned his first win of the week against Covenant on Tuesday night, tossing five innings while allowing just one hit and no runs, striking out seven Scots en route to the 9-7 victory. He then tossed an additional six innings against Emory on Sunday, allowing just three hits and no runs, while striking out five Eagles.
Johns currently sits at 3-0 on the year, allowing just five hits in his 15 innings of work, while boasting a perfect 0.00 ERA and striking out 16 batters. Johns held opponents to a mere .111 batting average on the week, averaging 9.82 strikeouts per game, while adding nine putouts and four assists.
Walch, a sophomore outfielder from Norcross, Ga., hit .700 on the week, finishing with six runs, two stolen bags, a pair of doubles and a .900 slugging percentage. Walch started the week 2-for-3 at the plate in Berry’s 9-7 victory over Covenant on Tuesday, adding one run in the contest. He then went a perfect 3-for-3 in Berry’s 10-3 win over Adrian on Saturday, adding three runs, a double and two stolen bases in the outing to lead all batters. Walch rounded out the week 2-for-4 at the plate against Emory on Sunday, scoring twice more, while adding a double to ensure Berry’s 6-3 victory over the Eagles.
On the year, Walch is hitting .563 with seven runs and two stolen bases in his six games for Berry.
The Vikings are back in action today at Piedmont College. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
