DANVILLE, KY - Baseball faced the Centre Colonels on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Vikings fell in two close contests by final scores of 4-1 and 4-3.
Game One (Berry 1, Centre 4)
The first game on a windy Kentucky day began with a strong start from pitcher Cam Welsh, taking care of business early. On top of that, 1st and 2nd basemen Chase Edmonds and Riley Uhls pulled off a finesse double play to end the 1st inning. Throughout the 2nd inning, action started to slow, with the tone being set that any scoring in this game wouldn't come easy.Â
The 3rd started out with a single from Daniel Hong, who later advanced to second after a bunt attempt. Even with this building momentum, Centre started to even out the Viking's pace. Nearing the bottom 3rd, the Colonels smacked an RBI triple, scoring on the Vikings 0-1. As the ballgame presumed through the 4th, Berry couldn't come up with an answer. Following the Colonel's run, singles rang out from Hong and Chase Edmonds, keeping the energy alive for the Vikings.Â
Rounding out the 5th, the Colonels ended up scoring a 2nd and 3rd run off 2 singles, making the score 0-3. Austin Jetmore started things out strong with a base hit early in the 6th inning, and Charles Polaski pulling out an impressive base hit. After an uneventful mid-game period, Chance Edmonds hit a single out to center field, allowing his brother chase to score an impressive run for the Vikings. Â
As the first game winded down, yet another run was scored by the Colonels, making the score 1-4.Â
Game Two (Berry 3, Centre 4)
With the Vikings batting first, Riley Uhls embodied smacked a single out to left field, throwing the Colonels off after a win. Later in the 1st, as wild pitches ensued, Uhls found himself on 3rd base. With this newfound momentum from the Vikings, the Kentucky crowd was in for an exciting game two.Â
The Vikings entered the 2nd determined to open the door with a lead. After a couple of walks, Chase Edmonds whacked the ball out to center field, allowing Ethan Finch to gain their first lead of the day on the Colonels. As this occurred, the stadium's energy shifted, as the Colonels now had to prove themselves on their own home turf. Freshman JohnMark Christopher rounded out the 2nd with two strikeouts. Â
As the atmosphere in Danville was starting to change, the Colonels started to get tired of the Vikings, besting them at home. After a static 1st half, Centre ended up scoring a run after a ground out. The energy zeroed out as both teams headed into the 4th. Â
Amid a tie game, both teams were eager to make a stride late into the contest. The 4th and 5th innings were met with tension, with the possibility of both teams making a mark at any time. Soon after, Jacob Bridges stepped up to the plate, smacking down a single. This palpable energy translated over to Chase Edmonds, who singled into center field. These hits set Garrett Lang to do something spectacular. The ball left the Colonel pitchers hand and was met with sheer force. Lang singled to left field, leaving the door wide open for Bridges and Edmonds to score 2 more runs for the Vikings. Â
Left with waning answers, the Colonels entered the 6th with trepidation. Through the entire JohnMark Christopher remained "in the zone", allowing minimal base hits in the latter half of this game. Transitioning into the 7th inning, the Colonels managed to execute a home run of their own, cutting the Viking's growing lead to one. Exiting the period, Centre whacked an RBI single to tie the contest. With both teams heading to their dugouts. Tension in the area was at an all-time high. Â
As the Colonels extended their bottom half possession, they managed to squeak out yet another run, taking over the Vikings to lead 3-4. The 8th and 9th proceeded with the Colonels maintaining that slight one-point lead.Â
The Vikings plan to pick up the pieces as they face center tomorrow at noon.Â
