JACKSON, Miss. - The Vikings put up a fight today on the road against the reigning SAA Champions, Millsaps in a tough loss 66-55.
Freshman
Briaiah Lewis led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds on her way to her first career double-double as a Viking and a new career high in points.
The first point of the game came at the 6:20 mark by the Majors on the foul like where they recorded their first three points to take their lasting lead for the game. Leading scorer Lewis had the first bucket for Berry a minute later with a huge three-point play. Millsaps took a 6-0 run late in the first to hold on to their lead and separate at 13-7.
Lewis was once again the first scorer for Berry in the second (and later mimicked the same in the third), however the Vikings struggled from behind the arc against the Majors.Â
For the game Berry shot a new season high - 29 threes but were only able to hit 6 for the whole game which really hurt them offensively. Millsaps built a double digit lead in the second while the Vikings continued to fight to bring it down to a seven-point differential at the half (31-24).
In the five minutes right after halftime, Berry woke up and fought to bring the game within one point with big baskets by Lewis,
Sylvia Kahoro, and
Jeryn Jarrett. This effort tied the game at 39 and again at the 41-point mark, but in the next minute and a half the home team brought the fire backed by their home crowd. A 10-2 run closed out the third and rebuilt the lead that the Vikings worked so hard to bring down.
Exhausted in the fourth after their third quarter fight, Berry was unable to overcome the deficit and fell to the Majors on the road.
Next up the Vikings head to Conway, Arkansas to take on the Warriors Friday, January 24.
