ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Berry Vikings women's basketball team (6-1) took down the Warren Wilson Owls (0-9) to give head coach
Thomas Johnson his 100
th career win this evening.
Coach Johnson has earned all 100 of his head coaching wins at Berry, cultivating a special and strong environment as the Vikings are currently on their best season run in the NCAA era (10 years).
Sylvia Kahoro and freshman
Katelyn St. Clair led the team with 11 points each tonight, a new career high for St. Clair. Both of them scoring all 11 in about 15 minutes of play.
Berry really did not have too great of a shooting night, tallying just four threes and shooting 21% from behind the arc and 32% from the field for the entire game.
Creating the most impact for the team was 21 made free throws accompanied by three other huge game winning categories:
25 points off of the Owls turnovers, 14 of those points in the instrumental third quarter
14 second chance points
36 points off the bench
(note that points from the bench cross over with the other two categories)
Defense and free throws stole the game for a cruising road victory. With key personnel subbing in and playing more minutes, the players off the bench held their own and found 36 points for the team in the 23-point win.
Only up by 9 after the entire first half, the third quarter played a huge part in the win as Berry outscored the Owls 28-14 to create separation and earn Coach
Thomas Johnson his 100th.
Berry will return to action on Friday at Huntingdon College for their second meet up of the season, in the first the Vikings defeated the Hawks 61-45, tip-off is set for 7:00 PM ET.
