Women’s Basketball Prevails in Overtime Thriller

ROME, Ga. – On Saturday afternoon, the Berry College women's basketball team won their second game of the weekend in overtime 77-65.

Senior Jana Morning led all scorers with 22 and added seven rebounds. Two other Vikings also scored in double digits--Sydney Blankenship with 17 and Madeline Sandman with 14. With those 14 points, Sandman added 11 rebounds to earn her first double-double of the season. For Hendrix, Anissa Gutierrez led the way with 19 points, followed by Isis Woods with 13 and Kessie Jenkins with 11.

Early in the game, both teams were off to a slow start on the offensive side of the ball with Berry (2-2, 2-2 SAA) only shooting 11.8 percent from the field and Hendrix (0-3, 0-3 SAA) shooting 20 percent at the end of the first. At the end of the defensive battle, the Vikings went into the second quarter with a 10-6 lead. During the second quarter, the Warriors outscored the Vikings 24-13 and headed to halftime with a 30-23 lead.

To start off the second half, Berry had missed opportunities on offense, missing six free-throws and only connecting with 22.2 percent from the field in the third quarter. On the flip side, Hendrix was finding their groove, leading Berry 42-27 halfway through the third and shooting 42.9 percent from the three-point line.

With a 46-37 lead to start the fourth quarter, the Vikings were starting to pick up the pace on offense and cut the lead to six with just under nine minutes remaining, but following a few missed shots the Warriors were able to extend their lead back to double digits and made it a 50-40 ballgame with 6:28 left.

Berry never gave up and continued to attack the Warriors' defense and cut the lead to five with a just one-minute remaining. With 51 seconds left, Blankenship connected on back-to-back layups to cut the game to one, 58-57.

With five seconds left and trailing by four, Morning was fouled on a three-point play, nailing all three to make it a 61-60 game. A technical foul was called on Hendrix to give Morning a chance to end the game. Missing both free-throws, Hendrix had a chance to walk away with a 61-60 win, but Mary Walters stole the ball on the inbounds play, was fouled and headed to the line with .3 seconds remaining. Connecting with 1-2, the game headed to overtime at 61-61. The Vikings outscored the Warriors 24-15 in the fourth.

During overtime, the Vikings had found the offensive rhythm they needed to seal the deal. Outscoring the Warriors 16-4 and shooting 57.1 percent from the field, Berry was able to get it done and walk away 2-0 on the weekend.

"I thought we started the game a little flat, but the second half the energy level picked up," said head coach Thomas Johnson. "I was proud that there was no quit in our team. It is still early in the season and we are still making mistakes, but these are growing mistakes and we will get better. Really proud of the way that they fought back."

The Vikings are back in action next weekend as they travel to Rhodes. To keep up with the latest Berry College women's basketball news, follow the team on Twitter @BerryVikings or @BerryWBB.
