Johnson's Late Layup Pushes Berry past Hawks 73-71

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Vikings men's basketball team earned a close 73-71 victory over the Huntingdon Hawks on Tuesday night off Blake Jones' and Caleb Johnson's 33 combined points.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Field goal percentage was tight with Berry leading 45.8% to the Hawks' 44.1%
• The Hawks led in three-pointers 7-5
• The Vikings held the halftime lead 39-36 with Jones putting up 11 points in the first half on 5-9 FG, 1-2 3FG. 
• The Vikings tied a program-record (in Berry's the NCAA DIII era) in steals with 17. 
• The Hawks stayed in the game on the boards, leading 42-30 in rebounding. 
 
BERRY STATISTCAL STANDOUTS:
• Caleb Johnson: 18 points, 7-for-15 FG, 1 3FG
• Blake Jones: 15 points, 7-for-11 FG, 1 3FG, 4 assists
• Tanner Spalding: 12 points, 3-for-8 FG, 7 rebounds
• Nick Marder: 7 points, 2-for-5 FG, 5 rebounds
 
HUNTINGDON STATISTICAL STANDOUTS:
• Brandon McLean: 20 points, 7-for-7 FG, 7 rebounds
• Andre Ashley: 17 points, 6-for-15 FG, 2 3GF, 9 rebounds
• Trey Livingston: 9 points, 3-for-4 FG, 4 rebounds
 
NOTABLES:
• Berry, now 4-1, is off to the best start since the 2010-11 season where they also started 4-1. This is also Jeff Rogers' best start during his Berry career.
• Johnson continues to lead the SAA in points-per-game with 19.2
• Jones is now No. 3 in the league in field-goal percentage at 61.1%
• Alton McCloud is tied at No. 5 in the SAA in rebounding (36)
• Four Vikings (Nick Marder, Lukas Korn, McCarty Forte, Caleb Johnson) are ranked top ten in the league in steals.
• Korn also leads the league in blocks with 8.

The Vikings are back in action this Saturday at the Cage Arena for an 8:00 pm tip against Oglethorpe. It will be the Vikings' Pack-The-House event for the season.
