ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Led by Megan Casey's career-high16 points, the Berry College women's basketball team defeated North Carolina Wesleyan College, 62-50, on Sunday afternoon.
The win improved Berry to 6-3 while the loss dropped N.C. Wesleyan to 3-4. The victory was the fourth straight for the Vikings.
Casey came off the bench to score 16 points for the Vikes. She was 6-of-11 in the field, as well as 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
Emma Cook and Peyton Howell each scored double-digit points for the Vikings as well.
Cook was 6-of-9 from the field, scoring 12 points for Berry. Howell scored 10 points for BC, shooting 3-of-7 in the field. Howell also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and sank two three-pointers for the Vikings.
Berry maintained the lead the entire game and had a 28-22 edge at the break. The Vikings then outscored the Battling Bishops, 34-28, in the last two quarters.
The Vikings shot 50-percent (24-of-48) to the Battling Bishops' 26.3-percent (20-of-76).
Berry also led the game in both rebounds (44-42) and assists (13-5). N.C. Wesleyan led the game in steals (16-8) and forced 28 turnovers to the Vikings' 17.
"We played an athletic, aggressive team today and we showed some toughness when we needed it," said BC Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We relied on the bench to give us solid minutes and I'm proud of the way Megan, Nia Smith, and Peyton stepped up in big moments throughout the game. Rosie Lynch and Imani Smith continue to play well and they are getting better each game. This is a great road win for us."
BC will host Louisiana College in their next match-up on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at the Cage Center as part of the Berry Classic.
