Berry Men's Basketball Defeats Covenant, 90-79

ROME, Ga. -- Sparked by a career-high 32 points from Caleb Johnson, Berry College defeated Covenant College, 90-79, on Tuesday.

The win improved the Vikings to 1-3. Covenant dropped to 3-1.

Johnson came off the bench to shoot 12-of-24 in the game. He made 5-of-8 three-pointers and had 18 points at halftime. Berry held a 53-35 edge at the break.

The Scots rallied in the second half. They trimmed the lead to one point twice, and tied the game at 79-79 on a free throw by Chris Boyd with 4:28 left.

The Vikings, however, ended the game on an 11-0 run to earn its first win of the year.

Nick Marder contributed 19 points for BC. He was 5-of-7 shooting, made 9-of-12 free throws and also dished eight assists. Freshman Blake Scherrman added 12 points, and Owen Jacobs notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Berry had 45 rebounds to the Scots' 36. The Vikes shot 48-percent (30-62) to Covenant's 37-percent (27-72).

"We are a young team that keeps improving every day," said Head Coach Jeff Rogers. "Covenant is the best team we've played. Our losses were really tough on us, but I think they helped us pull out this game tonight."

T.J. Cox had 17 points to lead Covenant, which had four players score in double digits.

The Vikings host Oglethorpe to open SAA play on Friday, Dec. 4.
