ROANOKE, Va. - - Emma Cook and Zarriah Pierce scored 22 points apiece, and the Berry College women's basketball team defeated Roanoke College, 84-80, on Friday night.
The team opened up the Vikings' play at the Roanoke Classic, improving their record to 2-1 overall. The loss dropped the Maroons to 0-3.
Cook was 7-for-14 from the field for Berry. She also added two three-pointers, was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, and grabbed seven rebounds.
Pierce shot 6-for-11 in the field, adding a team-high five three-pointers. She was also 5-of-8 from the free throw line and collected two steals in the win.
Valerie McLure also added 17 points for the Vikes. McLure shot 8-for-12 in the field and collected seven rebounds.
For the Maroons, Carly Beahm scored 22 points. She was 9-for-14 in the field, collected five rebounds, and sank 4-of-6 free throws.
BC worked from behind for the first two quarters, trailing 37-32 at the end of the first half.
A McLure jump shot opened up the second half, and the Vikes took a 39-38 lead with 8:30 left in the third quarter. BC never trailed again.
Roanoke shot 48.5-percent (32-of-66) to Berry's 47.5-percent (29-of-61), while the Vikings led the game in rebounds (40-29) and assists (19-17).
BC also made 45-percent (9-for-20) of their three-point shots to Roanoke's 16.7-percent (1-of-6).
"Roanoke is good team and well coached, so for us to come to their home court and play well is great for our team," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "Emma really stepped-up in a big way and Val played extremely hard. Led by Zarriah, the guards were consistent as they have been all season. It was a team effort tonight and it was good to see the ball go through the basket at key moments tonight."
The Vikes will take on East Mennonite in their next game on Saturday, Nov. 21. Game start is 3 p.m. to finish off BC's play in the Roanoke Classic.
