ONU hands men's soccer first defeat

Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Ohio Northern University ended Berry College's undefeated in and unscored-upon season on Sunday. The Polar Bears defeated the Vikings, 5-0, at Ford Field.

Both teams are 3-1 after the contest.

"Of course, we hate to lose, but I'm pretty happy with the effort of our team," said BC Head Coach Richard Vardy. "Injuries, a short bench and hot weather took its toll."

ONU had the edge in shots (19-17) and corner kicks (6-5). Jon Nelson had six saves and allowed all five goals. Zachary Wroblewski played the final 24:29 and made two saves for Berry.

Keegan Ross opened the game's scoring in the 11th minute. He tallied off a deflection and Chris Garbig earned the assist on the play.

David Janusz moved the score to 2-0 less than two minutes later. He finished into the lower left side off a pass from Austin Horton.

The Polar Bears got one more tally before halftime. Ben Conkin shot a deflection off the post for the goal.

Austin Horton (55th minute) and Grant Cayot (58th minute) closed the scoring for ONU.

"I'm still very optimistic," Vardy said. "We are 3-1 and when we get healthy, I really like our potential."

The Vikings host Roanoke on Saturday at 3 p.m.
