Berry shuts out Hanover, 1-0

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Zak Wallingford scored the game's only goal in the 59th minute, as Berry College edged Hanover, 1-0, on Saturday.

The scoring play followed a scramble after a free kick, which was taken by Berry's Bobby Grunow. Grunow crossed the ball low across the six yard box. Wallingford made a great run across and finished from close range.

"We had a poor first half, but we came out strong in second half and deserved the goal," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "We played tough defensively in the last 20 minutes as they were pushing--and being very direct--in trying to tie the match. It was good first game from all of our freshmen."

Hanover (0-1) had the edge in shots, 9-6. Both teams garnered for corner kicks.

Jon Nelson earned the shutout and had three saves BC.

Berry (1-0) faces tournament host Transylvania on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
