ROME, Ga. – Covenant College defeated Berry College, 2-1, at Ford Field on Tuesday. Christian Zapata scored for the Vikings.
The Vikings gained rhythm as the first half went on. They strung together a series of opportunities, but the game remained scoreless at the break.
"I felt we were the better team, but I think they outworked us in the first half and we didn't capitalize on their mistakes or our opportunities," said Zapata.
Two minutes into the second half Joes Friesen delivered the first blow to the Vikings off a header.
Another two minutes later, Kyle Fitting assisted a goal to Zapata to tie the game 1-1. Fitting played a free kick quickly to Zapata, who shot and scored for the home team.
In the 69th minute, Josh Hughes saved what would have been the goal to put Covenant ahead, keeping hope alive for the Vikings. However, in the seventy-sixth minute David Huertas scored the game-winning goal for Covenant off of a header.
The final ten minutes of the game Berry played at a furious pace, but they could not recover.
"I thought we defended well in the first half," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "We came out with more energy in the second half. We gave up two goals on set pieces, and I think that Covenant wanted it a little more than us today."
Berry goalkeeper Logan Hill recorded four saves and allowed two goals, taking the loss for Berry. Covenant goalkeeper Shuler Polk recorded two saves, while claiming the victory.
Berry is now 2-2-1 and Covenant improved to 3-1-1.
The Viking's next game is Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Ohio Northern.
