ROME, Ga. – Berry's women's basketball team pulled away with a late 19-5 run on its way to a 70-56 victory over Southern Athletic Association opponent Sewanee on Friday evening. Chanlir Segarra tallied a game-high 24 points, and Megan Walsh had a career-best 18 points and nine rebounds.
Berry snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-9 overall and 5-4 in SAA play. Sewanee fell to 5-13 and 2-7.
Trailing by four at halftime, Berry traded blows with Sewanee throughout the first 13 minutes of the second half before running away.
"I think we stayed the course tonight," said Berry Head Coach Stephanie Dunn. "We had good moments and bad moments throughout the game, but we played tough, adjusted to what they were trying to do and started to knock down shots on our end. Getting stops and [hitting] shots definitely made the difference down the stretch."
"We dug in and pulled it out," Walsh said.
In addition to the efforts of Segarra and Walsh, Alexa Evans totaled 11 points and eight rebounds for Berry. Kayla Sewell scored 13 points to lead Sewanee. Jamie Chauvin and Paige Lowe each added 11.
Berry will return to the hardwood on Sunday afternoon against SAA foe Centre. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
"We've got to come out with high intensity and high energy and build a quick lead," Walsh said. "This way we can maintain it and build it for the rest of the game."
