Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA. – The Berry College men's basketball team rallied from a 12-point second half deficit, but lost in overtime, 94-90, on Saturday at Covenant.
Owen Jacobs led BC with 25 points and a program-record 22 rebounds. Jacobs was 8-17 shooting and made 9-12 free throws. Mac Whalen scored 18 points, Hunter Smoak contributed 15 and freshman AJ Lewis scored 10 points off the bench.
The score was tied at 33 at halftime. Covenant led 52-40 with 13:06 remaining before mounting a comeback. Smoak was fouled on a 3-pointer and converted all of his shots to tie the game at 69 with 3:22 left.
CC bumped the lead to 80-73 with 59 seconds left. The Vikings, however, outscored the home club 9-2 to tie the game on a Whalen layup with 10 seconds left. The Scots led the entire overtime and held on to win and complete its two-game sweep of the Vikes.
"I was really proud of our guys that came off the bench," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Rogers. "They got us back in the game in the second half. We're not content with just coming close. We'll keep trying hard to find ways to win these close games."
Colton McGriff tallied a game-best 26 points for Covenant. CC shot 51-percent (33-65) to Berry's 45-percent (29-65). The Vikings won the battle of the boards, 44-37.
BC, which suffered its fourth straight loss, dropped to 3-5. The Scots improved to 5-5.
Berry plays two games in Daytona Beach Fla. next week. The Vikings face Shenandoah on Thursday night.
