Free throws aid Vikings in 88-86 win at Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. -- Mac Whalen scored a team-best 24 points as Berry College won at Emory & Henry, 88-86, on Saturday afternoon. He was 7-16 from the field, made four 3-pointers, and all six of his free throws.

Berry improved to 2-1 and E&H dropped to 2-2.

Free throw shooting played a big role in the game. Berry was 22-24 (92-percent) to EHC's 11-23 (50-percent).

Owen Jacobs had 22 points (8-14 shooting, 6-6 free throws) and 13 rebounds for BC. Lake Graham, playing his first game after returning from an injury, contributed 17 (6-6 free throws) points for the visitors.

"I was really proud of the effort our guys gave on the road," said Berry Head Coach Jeff Rogers. "They were able to battle through some adversity, kept their composure, and finished strong."

The Vikings led 40-38 at halftime. The Wasps, however, held a 74-66 lead with 3:30 left in the contest before Berry rallied.

Whalen made 3-pointers on three straight possessions and BC led 79-76 with 2:04 on the clock. 

Malcolm Green drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 86, with 18 seconds remaining. Green tallied a game-high 27 points on 11-16 shooting.

On the next possession, Graham was fouled and made both free throws with six seconds on the clock, bumping the lead to 88-86.

E&H's Marquise Coleman then missed a shot as time expired and Berry prevailed. 

BC led in rebounds, 45-38. The Wasps shot 49-percent (35-71) to Berry's 43-percent (30-70).

AJ Lewis added 10 points and Lee McCloud passed seven assists for the Vikings.

Berry plays Columbia International University on Tuesday. The game starts at 6 p.m. and will be played at Heathwood Hall School in Columbia, S.C.
